Understanding the difference between interior design and interior decorating

You have renovations on your mind. Feeling a little lost and are seeking help of professionals to assist you with your endeavor. You aren’t sure exactly what you need, and you have heard terms like interior design and interior decorating. You might have thought they are basically the same as people seem to use them interchangeably but they are not. While there are many aspects of their jobs that overlap, they are actually two different fields.  I’m here to explain the difference between the two so you can decide which you need for your up coming project.

Interior decorating

Decorating focuses mainly on the aesthetics, how things look, and the best way to furnish your space. Decorators don’t usually take part in the renovations or structural planning. Their focus is on surface concerns. What design style to choose for furniture, what colours to use in the space, which type of fabrics works best etc. Decorators usually don’t work with contractors since their work only starts once the structural work is completed. They usually work with carpenters, upholsterers and other such professionals

Interior design

Designers focus on functionality as well as the decor. A designer applies creative and technical solutions within the space that are functional to the client’s liefstyle. They will help you with spacial planning (where you will discuss the structural changes you wish to make), concept design and floor plans. Generally designers offer drafting full sets of floor plans and elevations. Designers will also assist you with choosing different materials, finishes, flooring, lighting and plumbing fixtures, as well as furniture and decorative accents. They will also oversee a renovation project from design to construction to completion. Designers work closer with contractors to make sure their designs are implemented correctly.

Who you would need to hire depends on that your needs are. If you are looking to make structural changes, for example adding or removing a wall, moving plumbing around, etc, than you would want to hire an interior designer. As they can help you will structural changes as well as the decorating. If  you are just looking to make changes to the appearance of your home, than a decorator will work, as they can transform a room to suit the clients wants and needs without doing technical work
