The Kitchen

The kitchen, oh where, oh where to begin? No matter how big or small your kitchen is, keeping it organized can be a challenge. From small appliances and pantry items to utensils and glassware, there’s a lot of stuff to stow away in your kitchen.

Cabinets:

Use your cabinets strategically, don’t overpack your cabinets, don’t keep what you don’t need. If you have high cabinets then keep everyday items in reach.

  • A filing organizer is ideal for heavy serving platters, Tupperware lids, cutting boards, and trays because not only does it screw into the bottom of the cabinet and won’t wiggle as you pull items in and out but will help keep the cabinet organized.
  • Put the heavier things in the bottom of the cabinet.
  • Use the inside of the doors to hang small towels, sponges, lids for the pots
  • You should line your kitchen with thin shelves for spices, if not shelves then small baskets to place onions or potatoes in.
  • Instead of stacking things in one cabinet buy wire shelf risers
  • Won’t have room on your countertops for a drying rack put the drying rack into a cabinet above the sink.
  • Store pans sideways, it’ll give more space in the cabinet.

How To Deal With Corner Cabinets?

Having a corner cabinet can be hard, reaching the back is difficult. They have to be one of the trickiest areas in a kitchen to figure out. They generally end up having a lot of space, but they aren’t very easy to access since the opening is narrow and the cabinet is deep.

  • Depending on where your corner cabinet is in your kitchen, it might just be the perfect place for a pull-out trash and recycling system.
  • Perhaps a drawer is an option, that way you can pull it out and reach the back.
  • Use the space to put an appliance, like the oven.
  • Above, stagger the cabinet, so you are able to open the cabinets.
  • Have corner shelves and use it as a pantry, no cabinet door needed.
  • Sometimes the best solution is killing the corner so it’s not accessible

Table:

  • Get a table that you can fold away, stored away it covers over the bookshelf but when needed you can open it up as a table.
  • Have a bench that opens up so you can store plasticware in it.
  • Under the table have storage like drawers.

A single color Scheme

So all white is not your thing? No problem — but try to pick a color and stick to it. If your cabinets, walls, and countertops are all varying shades of gray, for example, your kitchen space won’t feel chopped up by a countertop that’s a strong contrast to the woodwork above and below.

Light

Take the cafe curtain off the window and add under-cabinet lighting! You can even add a mirror over a window-less sink to bounce the light around. The lighter and brighter your kitchen, the roomier it will feel.

A Lack of Clutter

Less stuff equals more room in your kitchen for your eye to rest as it moves through the room, which will make it feel like there is more space. This is easier said than done in a small space, I know, so aim for less clutter on the spaces you see first, like the countertop opposite the doorway, and tuck the rest of your stuff along the edges or inside your cabinets and drawers. In a small kitchen, counter space is considered prime real estate.

  • If you’re currently taking up valuable counter space with a bulky dish drying rack, it’s time to order an over-the-sink option. Not only will it save space, but it also allows water to drip right down the drain rather than into a dish or onto the counter.
  • Invest in a cart that can transport heavy dishes from kitchen to dining and act as extra counter space for cooking and entertaining.
  • Stash pantry items in the see-through pockets of an over-the-door organizer to virtually eliminate search time.

An Island:

  • Make it hollow this way you can use it as a table and store bar stools underneath, that way you don’t trip over the chair legs.
  • Have cabinets underneath to store things in, like pots and pans or a shelf for your recipe books.
